Basic gym etiquette

170SE_lt_ng_hrThis hasn’t been my best morning. I had a great leg workout and decided to hit the heavy bag for cardio. The bags are in the aerobics class room, which is sub-optimal, but at least they have some.

I’m pounding away at the heavy bag and this dude and his significant other come in. I’ve seen them before. They’re recent “resolutionists,” and every time I see them, they’re flaunting one rule or another. I’m not a huge stickler for rules, so I’ve ignored them. However, they seem to ignore the fact that other people are around, and set up a phone and a speaker to play music. First time they did this, I just asked them to turn it down so I didn’t have to hear it over the music in my headphones.

Today was different. They set up their speaker, and I asked them to turn it down again. Dude refuses. I ask again, and mention it’s against the gym rules to have a speaker at all. He again refuses. I go to the desk to complain, and the girl at the desk says she can’t do anything about it. I tell her she certainly can. As an employee of the gym, she needs to be able to enforce the rules. So I drag her in there and the argument continues. She still refuses to do anything and says her manager will be there in 15 minutes. I tell her I have to leave, and to have her manager call me. She says she’ll try, but there’s no guarantee.

At this point, I’m so angry I’m shaking. I’m also still in my boxing gloves, and working very hard not to put them to their intended use.

How hard is gym etiquette, folks? Music belongs in your headphones. We don’t all have the same taste in music. I shouldn’t have to listen to yours. You shouldn’t have to listen to mine. That, to me, seems basic etiquette. Probably even more than not curling in the squat rack.
