The power of craft

Young athletic male street fighter, against black background

When I’m working out, I like to vary my cardio, because I’m easily bored. One of the things I do for cardio is to hit the heavy bag.

I was in an LA Fitness in Orlando recently, finished lifting, and decided to go hit the bag. A few minutes after I started, a young guy came in, wrapped his hands, pulled out some gloves, and started on the bag.

From the moment he started, I could tell he’d had some training. Between the variety of punches and the footwork, he was impressive. What really got my attention was the bobbing and weaving he was doing in response to the movements of the bag. That, combined with the look in his eye, and you could tell that in his mind’s eye he saw an opponent. The sheer imagination involved was impressive, but his response was even more amazing.

I could tell he was watching me, too, sizing me up. I outweighed him by an easy sixty pounds, but I hit like a heavyweight. I don’t throw a lot of fast punches, but I make every one count. I also have never had any fight training, other than being a boxing fan as a kid and doing a little reading online.

I’m pretty sure he knew what I knew – he could pretty easily have kicked my ass. While I’m larger and stronger, I’d be willing to bet I’d never lay a hand on this kid. Why?

He has the imagination, and has honed his craft. He has the keys to success.
