Coming out of the fog

fogThis morning, they installed my new PowerPort in my chest, which they’ll use to deliver my chemo on Monday.

When we were in pre-surgery prep, it was funny, because the same nurse that handled the sedation for my bone marrow biopsy on Monday did my pre-surgery prep today. This actually worked out well, because (1) I liked the guy the first time and (2) He realized I’d had blood done three days prior, so we could avoid that set of needle sticks and (3) He was able to tell the nurse handling today’s sedation that I’m really resistant to local anesthetics and sedation – he had to use nearly twice the normal dose for a guy my size to knock me out.

Apparently, she took this seriously. The upside to that, of course, was that I didn’t feel a thing during the procedure. The relatively minor downside is that I’m still pretty foggy, even after coming home and sleeping a while. On the way home from the hospital, I simply could not keep my eyes open. We stopped at Kroger to pick up two prescriptions, and I sat in a glider that was being displayed as part of a yard furniture display, and I fell asleep there while Suzanne picked up the stuff we needed. It only takes maybe 5-10 minutes to get from Kroger to our house, I fell asleep on that trip, too. So I was pretty out of it.

I kinda figured I’d be sore for this one, but I didn’t count on this – I don’t have a comfortable side to sleep on anymore. Sleeping on the meatball is difficult, and I can’t sleep on the port side for a while, either.

And unlike many people, my port is on port, since my tumor is on starboard.
