The season of cold & death is upon us

Today is the equinox, the day when most of the world sees an equal amount of day and night. It also marks the beginning of fall, or as I like to call it, “the season of cold and death.”

When I opened the door at 5:30 this morning to walk the dog, I was greeted with an arctic chill. I knew it was coming. I had even put on a sweatshirt, but was still wearing shorts.

Fall in the south is the worst. It will be 90° during the day, and 55° at night. Try to dress for that. It’s nearly impossible.

All around me, people are celebrating the crisp air, the return of boots and sweaters and jeans, and pumpkin spice everything. They’re deep in football season. They’re getting ready to consume mass quantities for Thanksgiving. My daughter is loving football season, because it’s also marching band season. My girlfriend is celebrating dry air and its effect on her hair, as well as boots and jeans and sweaters.

Me, I’m lamenting that it’s getting too cold to ride my motorcycle without looking like the Michelin tire man. 5:30AM dog walks are really starting to suck. You have to practically carry a suitcase full of clothes if you’re doing anything that spans both day and night.

Mostly, I’m cold.

Call me in spring.
